Congress: End the Overuse of Antibiotics on Factory Farms

Text on Pill Bottle (Convio)Factory farms are a breeding ground for bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — superbugs — that are creating a serious public health crisis. Today, 80% of antibiotics used in the U.S. are used in agriculture. It is now common practice on factory farms to feed animals regular, low doses of antibiotics even when they're not sick — largely to compensate for stressful, crowded, filthy conditions.

Many of these antibiotics are the same drugs that we rely on to treat infections in people.
2 million Americans experience antibiotic resistant infections every year, resulting in at least 23,000 deaths.

There's a solution and you can help. Tell your members of Congress to end the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms.

Antibiotics are critical tools in human medicine; however, these life-saving drugs are losing their effectiveness. Over time, bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotics and then pass their new resistant traits on to the next generation. Our existing antibiotics may not work against new strains of resistant bacteria, which can make people sick. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a growing public health threat, and industrial agriculture is making the problem worse.

Factory farms are the biggest user of antibiotics. They use antibiotics not only to treat sick livestock, but commonly feed low doses of antibiotics it all their animals to compensate for unhealthy conditions. This practice, called nontherapeutic use, involves much lower levels of antibiotics than are needed to effectively kill off bacteria, allowing resistant bacteria to thrive and become even more resistant over time. These new super-bugs can spread from farm animals to humans via food, animal-to-human transfer on farms and through contaminated waste entering the environment.

PAMTA/PARA to ban unnecessary antibiotics use in livestock

Dear [Congress members],

I urge you to pass the bill to stop the use of unnecessary antibiotics in livestock -- HR 1150, the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA) and S 1256, the Preventing Antibiotic Resistance Act (PARA).

Please pass PAMTA/PARA to protect the effectiveness of our antibiotics and prevent the creation of dangerous new resistant bacteria.
