Sign the Petition to Ban Fracking in Maryland

DontFrackMarylandlogoSM.jpgHydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking) is a dangerous method used to extract natural gas from shale rock. Each new well requires millions of gallons of fracking fluid (a mixture of water, sand and toxic chemicals), which is injected underground at high pressure to break up the rock and release the gas.

From start to finish, fracking is too risky for Maryland — it threatens the air we breathe, the water we drink, the communities we love, and the climate we depend on.

Fracking has not yet started in Maryland, but it could in the next few years because the oil and gas industry is targeting western Maryland. If the industry succeeds, generations of Marylanders would pay the environmental and public health costs.

Learn more about fracking

Fracking and other unconventional methods of extracting oil and natural gas come with intensive drilling and mining, massive amounts of toxic waste, air pollution and pervasive infrastructure that threatens our essential food and water resources.

To frack a well, operators mix millions of gallons of water with tens of thousands of gallons of chemicals, including some known to cause cancer, and then pump it all into the earth at extreme pressure to try to break up rock formations so oil and natural gas might flow.

Drilling and fracking:

  • require millions of gallons of water for each well, competing with farmers for local water supplies.
  • produce massive amounts of toxic and even radioactive waste with no good disposal options.
  • contaminate sources of drinking water as a result of disposal problems and the thousands of leaks and spills every year.
  • can lead houses and water wells to explode, due to contamination from methane and other harmful gases.
  • bring untold costs to local communities, from declines in agriculture, real estate and tourism to road damage, public health problems and increased demand for social services.

Don't Frack Maryland

Petition to Maryland Legislature

Please support a ban on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and horizontal drilling in the state. From start to finish, fracking is too risky for Maryland -- it threatens the air we breathe, the water we drink, the communities we love and the climate we depend on.

Fracking consumes millions of gallons of fresh water, turning it into toxic wastewater that includes unknown chemical additives as well as contaminants from deep underground. Treatment facilities aren't equipped to handle this wastewater, so it could flow into Maryland's groundwater, lakes, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

Most of any jobs created would go to people from out of state who have oil and gas industry experience, while jobs from tourism, agriculture and future economic development are lost due to the industrialization that accompanies drilling and fracking. While the oil and gas industry seeks to profit from selling Maryland's gas, we would be the ones left with the legacy of pollution.

Please support a Maryland fracking ban.

Sincerely,
