Tell the FDA to publicly report sales and distribution of antibiotics for farm animals

Infograph: Antibiotic Misuse in Factory Farms Can Make You SickAfter decades of delay, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that we can trust pharmaceutical companies to do the right thing. Earlier this year, the FDA published voluntary “guidance” to the meat industry about only using antibiotics in livestock feed with the oversight of a veterinarian.

FDA has explained their position by saying they will “trust but verify.” But one of the many problems with relying on this voluntary approach is that there is not enough public information about how these drugs are used to actually verify anything.

Will you tell FDA today that we need better information about antibiotic use in livestock?

Antibiotics are critical tools in human medicine but these life-saving drugs are losing their effectiveness. Over time, bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics and then pass the new resistant traits on to the next generation. Any use of antibiotics to some degree leads to resistance thus antibiotic resistant bacteria is a growng public helaht problem. In order to maintain the effectiveness of antibiotics for as long as possible we must only use antibiotics when absolutely necessary.

However, the biggest user of antibiotics is livestock producers. Factory farms use antibiotics all the time, at low levels – not necessarily to treat illness but to promote growth and compensate for stressful conditions. Factory farm animals are still getting sick due to the proliferation of antibiotic resistant bactera. And these new super-bacteria can spread from farm animals to humans via food, via animal-to-human transfer on farms and in rural areas, and through contaminated waste entering the environment.
