Your Support Means Furry Friends to Help Kids Get Better!

Children who have undergone major surgery, or who have experienced a traumatic injury, often spend weeks at Gillette as they receive daily—sometimes even twice-daily—sessions of physical and occupational therapy. Finding ways to motivate children during their therapy sessions can sometimes prove challenging. But thanks to a new program at Gillette, motivation is being found through Animal-Assisted Therapy.

Research into Animal-Assisted Therapy suggests that children who interact with a dog during therapy sessions experience a reduction in physical and emotional pain, reduced levels of Cortisol (the stress hormone), lowered blood pressure, and increases in spontaneous language and social skills.

Emily Monicken is mom to Delaney, a Gillette patient who recently underwent major surgery. “It’s incredible to see the effect the therapy animals have on Delaney,” Emily says. “She’s literally begging to get to her appointments!”

We need your support to keep the AAT program funded for many years to come. Please see below to make an online donation!
