Confront the Global Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation Crisis.

Dear [Decision Maker],

The U.S. government urgently needs to confront the global safe drinking water and sanitation crisis. I therefore urge you to protect the U.S. Development Assistance Account funding for fiscal year 2012 specifically to provide the necessary funds for sustainable clean drinking water and sanitation in the countries in greatest need.

Water, sanitation and hygiene solutions are cost effective. For every dollar invested in water and sanitation, about eight dollars is returned in increased productivity and decreased health care costs. Investing in water, sanitation and hygiene is extremely efficient and has immediate impact on health, education and economic growth. In the Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act of 2005, Congress committed itself to help expand access to clean water and sanitation for people in the developing world. But to effectively carry out this mission the United States must defend development assistance aimed at sustainable management of fresh water resources and expanded access to safe water and sanitation.

I urge you to support a funding level of $315 million in fiscal year 2012 to implement the Water for the Poor Act. With your leadership we have a chance to improve millions of lives, protecting people and their environment, by ensuring sustainable safe water and sanitation.

Sincerely,
