ENDA

President Obama: Extend workplace equality to millions!

After two decades of campaigning, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) finally passed the Senate for the first time in history. But the House Republican leaders are refusing to act.

While we continue to demand that House leaders bring ENDA to the floor for a vote, President Obama can protect more than 16 million more people by issuing a federal contractor executive order.

Right now, President Obama can issue the order – but he needs to hear from you. Send a letter now.

Letter:

Stop LGBT discrimination by federal contractors

Dear President Obama,

I'm writing to ask that you issue an executive order to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity by federal contractors.

Although a strong majority of U.S. Senators voted for passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to provide workplace protections for nearly every workplace, the House Republican leaders are refusing to act. While we continue to demand that House Republican leaders bring ENDA to the floor for a vote, you are in a position in the meantime to protect millions of American workers immediately by including sexual orientation and gender identity alongside long-standing anti-discrimination protections for companies doing business with the federal government.

Currently, in 29 states, it's legal under state law to fire or refuse employment to a person because he or she is gay or lesbian -- and 33 states lack laws banning discrimination based on gender identity.

Simply issuing an executive order that includes sexual orientation and gender identity protections would extend equal workplace rights to an additional 16 million workers, ensuring no employee of a federal contractor joins the ranks of the unemployed just because of who they are.

By expanding protections for LGBT employees of federal contractors, you would be helping to ensure that more Americans get an equal opportunity to succeed and that federal taxpayer dollars are used to support companies with the best employment practices.

As a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, and as part of the 80% of fair-minded Americans who support LGBT workplace protections, I urge you to issue an executive order to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity by federal contractors.

Sincerely,
