Families Face Hunger in Haiti After Hurricane Matthew

When the destructive forces of Hurricane Matthew swept through towns and villages in southwestern Haiti on October 4, it destroyed significant crops and food reserves. An estimated 750,000 people are in immediate need of food and emergency agricultural assistance. The entire coastal area around Les Cayes, Haiti is devastated, with nearly all of the crops lost and fishing activity at a standstill as boats and equipment were washed away by the storm.

International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) is responding to the crisis in Haiti with an emergency distribution of food for vulnerable families. IOCC, an ACT Alliance member, is working with relief partners on the ground to support the distribution of food parcels that will feed more than 1,500 children, women and men for the next week. There is also concern over the long-term impact of Hurricane Matthew’s destruction of the fall harvest. The need to feed vulnerable families for the next three to four months is critical to their well-being while farmland is cleared and crops are replanted and harvested.

IOCC is also in contact with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) and Greek Orthodox missions in Haiti to assess the needs of families and communities, and working to ensure they are receiving assistance.

Hurricane Matthew is adding to the suffering of the Haitian people who experienced a catastrophic earthquake six years ago. The hurricane has left 1.4 million people in urgent need of humanitarian relief including food, clean water, shelter, health and medical aid. IOCC anticipates and is preparing for a larger, extended response to help meet the needs of the people in Haiti.

IOCC’s Frontline responders are also actively monitoring the situation in the United States and the Bahamas. Rising floodwaters in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew in North Carolina continue to threaten communities and IOCC is working in cooperation with local parishes, state authorities and partner organizations to determine the most effective response to the emerging needs.
