Hurricane Matthew Makes Landfall in Haiti

Hurricane Matthew

IOCC is closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Matthew as it crosses Haiti and threatens catastrophe just six years after a powerful earthquake claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people. The most powerful Atlantic tropical storm in almost a decade, the hurricane is accompanied by heavy rain and category 4 hurricane winds of 145 mph that threaten to devastate the impoverished Caribbean nation's towns and villages.

IOCC staff have been in contact with partners, including members of the ACT Alliance, and have expressed concern for the well-being of the people of Haiti who have suffered so greatly. IOCC staff are reaching out to partners along the projected path of the hurricane, including Haiti and the Bahamas. Additionally, IOCC is activating its Emergency Response Network Frontliners in the southeastern United States for possible response to Hurricane Matthew.
