Hypothyroidism is a condition caused by a deficiency in the hormones produced by the thyroid gland. The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are weight gain, intolerance to cold, lethargy, skin problems such as hair loss and infections, and reproductive and nervous system abnormalities. Thyroid hormones influence most of the dog’s body systems, and thyroid deficiency causes a decreased metabolic rate. Decreased metabolic rate can lead to decreased body temperature, weight gain, decreased heart rate and decreased mental function.
