20th AnniversaryTwenty years ago, the idea to host a large scale all level yoga class as a way to unite the breast cancer community was born. Jennifer Schelter, a Yoga Alliance certified teacher and training facilitator, developed a curriculum that incorporated meditation, yoga and music to powerfully effect the connection between mind, body and soul. When her friend and student Courtney Kapp, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, introduced Jennifer to Jean Sachs, Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s chief executive officer, the three women conceived what is now known as Reach & Raise.
Reach & Raise became an annual event held on the iconic steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It has been named one of the “50 Best Philadelphia Fitness Events” by Philadelphia Magazine. Thousands of people have shared in a yoga practice breathing together towards a common purpose of raising awareness and funds to support the work of Living Beyond Breast Cancer.
So much has happened since the first event in 2001:
- More than $4,000,000 has been raised to support those diagnosed with breast cancer
- Nearly 20,000 people have attended events in cities including Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Denver, Fort Myers, Kansas City and across the U.S.
Reach & Raise co-founder Jennifer Schelter has led this inspiring all-levels yoga practice for the past 20 years. In 2005, Yvette Pecoraro, a celebrated songwriter, chant artist, and vocal/mantra coach joined to perform during the practice and she has continued for the last 16 years.
