Hey guys! As you know, I have been living with metastatic breast cancer (Stage IV) since July 2015. The last few years have consisted of virtually non-stop doctor's appointments, radiology scans, blood draws, surgeries, 7 different treatment changes and several bouts with bronchitis, pneumonia & colitis. I am fighting every day to stay strong, stay alive & stay active in finding ways to help other people who also have breast cancer. I had the privilege this year of becoming a Hear My Voice volunteer for Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC). Part of our campaign is to bring heightened awareness of what metastatic breast cancer means, what can be done to provide support, education & resources to those affected by it, and to participate in community outreach activities intended to promote a greater understanding of how people can help us achieve these goals.
Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast into other areas of the body; it is considered a terminal disease at that point. If you know someone who died from breast cancer, they were in Stage IV (advanced) metastatic breast cancer. Many people do not understand these terms, many people think that having the cancer move to other areas means that now you have lung, liver, bone, etc. cancer (it is not; it is still breast cancer, it just has metastasized), and many people think that early detection is all that is necessary for survival of cancer. Current statistics for those who have MBC are brutally grim. The five year survival rate is between 22-36%; that means that each person who is diagnosed as Stage IV has a very small chance of living even just a few years after the cancer spreads beyond the breast. While we are fighting hard for research into new treatments, which can extend our lives, there is not currently a cure for breast cancer.
If you want to help an organization that works tirelessly for those affected by breast cancer, this is your opportunity. Please join us in raising funds to help LBBC continue their mission to provide support services nationwide. For every dollar donated, 84 cents goes directly toward LBBC's educational & support programs. Your commitment to helping us will go a long way in the fight against breast cancer!
