Yoga and breast cancer are truly intertwined for me, so I didn’t think twice about joining this fundraiser. My diagnosis came smack dab in the middle of a yoga teacher training that was broken down into weekend intensives. I shared my fear of getting biopsy results at class in December. In January I told them I would miss February for a bilateral mastectomy & diep flap reconstruction. In March I arrived for the weekend with one drain still in my hip. The final weekend of class was a retreat at an ashram in April two weeks after my first chemo. Timed perfectly to coincide with my hair falling out so I arrived freshly buzzed, musing that it would be one place where no one would bat an eyelash at my bald head.
I often say that yoga saved my life. Everything cancer tried to take, yoga helped me hold onto instead. It centered my outlook and kept me from outright despair. It strengthened my body before surgery and helped my recovery immensely. The OT said when releasing me- it might not be YOUR full range of motion, but that’s actually really great. My yoga community became a place for me to become more closely acquainted with my post-treatment body, a place where I could push my limitations.
Now, through the power of yoga, I will reach out and raise funds to ensure that anyone diagnosed with breast cancer has access to trusted information and community of support. No one should face breast cancer alone. Everyone should have reliable information to make the best decisions for themselves.
Since its launch in 2001, Reach & Raise has raised more than $4 million to support those diagnosed with breast cancer. Each year, Living Beyond Breast Cancer reaches over 600,000 people with their emotional, practical and evidence-based content that is meaningful to those newly diagnosed, in-treatment, post-treatment and living with metastatic disease.
