Fifty years ago, Congress and President Johnson passed the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965, putting an end to discriminatory voting laws that denied African Americans and Latinos the right to vote.
It was a historic victory that came about after decades of struggle during the Civil Rights Movement. But in 2013, the Supreme Court gutted a central provision of the Voting Rights Act, taking away one of the strongest tools we have to block discriminatory voting laws.
Two members of Congress have introduced bipartisan legislation (the Voting Rights Advancement Act) which would restore the VRA and stop states from implementing discriminatory voter ID and voter suppression laws. This legislation has bipartisan support — but it needs to come up for a vote! Sign our petition and tell the Republican leadership to protect our democracy and bring the Voting Rights Advancement Act up for a vote!
Restore voting rights in America!
Dear John Boehner & Kevin McCarthy,
August 6th marks the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which for 48 years protected voters across the country and ensured that everyone, regardless of their skin color, age, or economic status, had the right to vote. But today, the Voting Rights Act is broken.
