Ask the New Congress to Uphold Just, Humane Immigration Policies

Immigrant Flag El PasoAs early as their first week in session, we have seen some concerning legislation coming out of the newly-elected 114th Congress. This includes opposition to deferred action programs for childhood arrivals and parents of U.S. citizens, new border security measures, and a renewed commitment to detaining and deporting our immigrant brothers and sisters.

One concerning piece of legislation on the table, H.R. 399 or, the Secure Our Borders First Act of 2015, and the accompanying Senate Bill, would further militarize the border, increase drone surveillance (a highly ineffective and costly tactic to catch migrants crossing the border), and add 27 miles of additional fencing to the U.S.-Mexico border fence. Already, Columban Priests in El Paso, TX witness the immense suffering of migrants who are often targets of brutality and inhumane treatment. This legislation does nothing to investigate human rights violations, nor is it fiscally sound. Our moral obligation is to uphold the dignity of every human person by passing humane immigration policies.

Send a message to your Representative and Senators, and ask them to oppose H.R. 399 and the accompanying Senate Bill.  Tell them that as a person of faith, you are called to care for the “least of these” in your community.
