My name is Shaun Piercey and I am the Head Professional at The Ranch Golf and Country Club. To say the world has changed over the past year and a bit is an understatement. We have all had to change our daily lives in order to help end the pandemic. We still have a little ways to go, but I do believe the finish line is finally in sight as we continue to get people immunized and a very steady pace.
Last season, after the pandemic hit, I was hesitant to ask people to donate for MS for a variety of reasons. It wasn't until a Ranch Ladies league member motivated me to continue to do my annual fundraising by telling me that people will still give and that raising money for any charitable cause does not stop due a pandemic. Her motivation led to myself being the #1 Fundraiser in Edmonton for 2020 raising over $15,000! Team Ranch has now been fortunate enough to raise nearly $200,00 since 2009.
This year my goal is to raise another $15,000 for the MS Society of Canada. I do believe we are getting closer and closer to a cure with every dollar raised.
My story to why raising money for the MS Society is so important to me can be found below:
In 2009, myself, along with The Ranch Golf and Country Club, became involved in raising money for the MS Society. We decided to make it the official charity for our Men's and ladies leagues, as well as for our Corporate members.
This charity was an easy choice as the official charity of the Ranch due to the fact that I have a close personal connection with Multiple Sclerosis. On November 29th, 2007, my wife Nicole gave birth to our beautiful son Jonah. Shortly thereafter, Nicole began to experience blurred vision known as optic neuritis. This condition is a common symptom of MS and Nicole was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis a few weeks later. Ever since the day she was diagnosed with MS, I have watched Nicole deal with the difficulties of this horrible disease. She is a wonderful mother, but more and more I see her struggle to have the energy to keep up with our 13 year old son. Her issues with fatigue and pain have really increased over the past couple years. It has come to the point where we recently moved into a bungalow so that Nicole doesn't have to manage as many stairs as even going up the stairs sometimes is a battle. That is why I am more determined than ever to help find a cure for Nicole, everyone who battles MS, and for the friends and family members of those who have MS. Since 2009 TEAM RANCH has participated in the annual MS WALK FOR A CURE and we have raised almost $200,000!
Through personal contacts, team members, and with the help of Ranch league participants and Ranch Members, our goal this year is to raise $15,000 for MS!! In addition to funding research, the MS Society of Canada provides support and services to help those living with this disease, their families and caregivers. I, along with some teammates, am participating in a MS walk for a cure on May 30th, 2021. My team is called TEAM RANCH and I kindly ask for your support!
