$5 million gift from Patrick Dovigi funds innovative sports clinic

June 12, 2019 (Toronto, ON) A transformational gift from Patrick Dovigi will help create an integrated, one-stop shop to revolutionize sports medicine research and care in Canada. The Dovigi Family Sports Medicine Clinic will provide a single point of access for medical, rehabilitation, imaging and surgical care for sports injuries.

“I spent many years involved in professional sports and it was important for my family and I to ensure all Canadians have access to the best care and research in the country,” said Patrick Dovigi, founder and CEO of Green For Life Environmental Inc. “This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of athletes across Canada.”

Over 1.5 million Canadians suffer sports-related injuries every year and face painful delays in both diagnosis and treatment. Widely recognized as a sports medicine leader, Sinai Health has specialized expertise in repairing complex injuries. Dr. John Theodoropoulos — orthopaedic surgeon at Sinai Health and the orthopaedic physician for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays — uses a combination of innovative surgery and emerging new therapies to heal tough injuries and restore performance and quality of life.

“The Dovigi Family Sports Medicine Clinic will provide a multidisciplinary team to take care of athletes and their injuries, similar to a team that would take care of a professional athlete,” said Dr. John Theodoropoulos, orthopaedic surgeon at Sinai Health System and Director of the Dovigi Family Sports Medicine Clinic. “Not only will we treat patients with regenerative biological treatments, but Patrick’s contribution to a new research chair will support scientists to better diagnose, prevent and treat injuries. This visionary gift from Patrick will translate into better outcomes for patients across the country.”

The clinic will offer an exceptional level of care to both recreational and elite athletes that is unmatched by any other Canadian hospital, by offering medical, rehabilitation, imaging and surgical care all under one roof. It will also use evidence-based research to drive more targeted and effective care for patients. The clinic will create shorter wait times for patients through an acute soft tissue injury central intake and assessment centre relieving pressure on emergency departments and making it possible to diagnose accurately and treat quickly after an injury.

“It’s important that every athlete, at every level, has access to the very best research and care, whether they are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior,” said David Cynamon Co-Chair and President of the Board, Sinai Health Foundation. “Patrick’s leadership is helping us take sports medicine to the next level at Sinai Health.”
