1. How is Mount Washington Observatory supported?

Mount Washington Observatory is a private, non-profit institution. We do not receive any funding from the State of New Hampshire and, contrary to what many people might believe, only a tiny fraction of our funding comes from the National Weather Service each year—only 1.7%. Our funding comes from a variety of sources, including membership dues, fundraising, events, grants educational programs, corporate sponsorship, retail sales and research contracts.

2. What will my donation support?

Together with the support of thousands of people like you, your funding supports the ongoing operation of the Mount Washington Observatory. 

3. What does the Observatory do?

Since 1932, Mount Washington Observatory has maintained a fully-staffed, year-round weather station atop Mount Washington. We collect weather data, maintaining one of the longest continuous climate records in North America, and conduct a variety of weather and climate-related research projects. We operate two museums, including the mountaintop Mount Washington Museum and the Weather Discovery Center in North Conway Village, NH. We also conduct a variety of innovative educational outreach offerings, including classroom programs and live distance learning programs, which utilize videoconferencing technology to connect classrooms anywhere in the world with our mountaintop weather station.

5. Is my contribution tax-deductible?

Yes. Mount Washington Observatory is a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution; therefore, your contribution may be tax-deductible. Please check with your tax adviser to find out more.

8. Can I make a recurring online donation?

Yes, on our recurring gifts page, you can schedule a monthly, quarterly, or yearly gift to the Observatory. Please do so!

9. Can I make a donation by mail or phone?

10. Can I make a gift in honor or in memory of someone?

Yes, you can do both. Tribute Gifts are a unique way to honor an event, an anniversary or an achievement. Memorial Gifts are a meaningful way to honor a loved one. You can make these gifts online or over the phone by calling (800) 706-0432, option 2. If you call, please indicate your wishes to our staff.

11. What’s the difference between membership dues and donations?

Becoming a member is a great way to support the Observatory because you receive our magazine, Windswept, you have access to free tours of the Observatory, you enjoy premium content on the website and so much more. One-time gifts, recurring gifts, tribute gifts and memorial gifts are all great ways to support the Observatory as well. Many of our members maintain an annual Observatory membership while also making additional gifts from time to time throughout the year. In the end, it all goes to support this great cause.

12. Can I give a small amount to the Observatory each month?

Yes, by all means. While you may not be able to make a large one-time gift, giving in smaller increments is a great way to support our cause. Visit our recurring gifts page to learn more.

13. My company matches my gifts to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. Is Mount Washington Observatory eligible to receive this type of match?

Yes, many corporations have contributed to the Observatory through their respective matching gifts programs. To see if your company matches charitable gifts, visit your personnel office.

14. Will Mount Washington Observatory rent, sell, or trade my personal information?
