New Jersey: Ban on Gestation Crates Proposed

New Jersey: Ban on Gestation Crates Proposed

Name: Restriction on Confinement of Animals for Food Producing Purposes

Bill Number: S 2786

Gestation crates are used by large-scale pig farming operators to prevent breeding sows from moving or even lying down in bare stalls for most of their lives. In addition to causing suffering due to lack of mobility outside of a very small space, this type of confinement farming leads to disease in both animals and humans.

S 2786 would add the confinement of gestating pigs to the list of offenses that constitute cruelty to animals.

Support an end to the cruel confinement of gestating pigs

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask you to support S 2786, which would require prohibit the use of gestation crates to confine pregnant sows. This bill would add the use of gestation crates to the list of cruel treatment of animals.
Gestation crates prevent breeding sows from moving or even lying down in bare, metal-sided stalls during pregnancy. In addition to causing suffering due to lack of mobility outside of a very small space, this type of confinement farming leads to disease in both animals and humans.

Please let New Jersey give sows some relief from a lifetime of inhumane confinement.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
