New Jersey: Ban on Spring-Loaded Traps Introduced

New Jersey: Ban on Spring-Loaded Traps Introduced

Name: Ban on Manufacture, Sale and Use of Spring-Loaded Traps

Bill Number: S 2750/A 4407

Spring-loaded traps are a cruel and indiscriminate method of trapping animals that endangers humans and companion animals, as well as intended wildlife targets. This bill would ban the manufacture, sale, offer for sale, possession, importation or transportation of a spring-loaded trap that restrains an animal by capturing the foot, leg or other body part. This ban includes enclosed foothold type traps and any other type of trap that uses a jaw, arm, bar, cable or wire to grasp or pin the animal. Traps do not discriminate as to what type of animal they catch, and can cause excruciating pain and suffering before an animal succumbs to its injuries.

Please Put an End to the Manufacture, Sale, and Use of Spring-Loaded Traps

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask your support for legislation, S 2750/A 4407, which would help ensure the safety of wild animals, humans and their companion animals by banning the manufacture, sale, possession, importation, transportation and use of spring-loaded traps. The most common spring-loaded trap is the steel-jaw leghold trap, which been declared inhumane by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association and the National Animal Control Association. These traps have also been banned or severely restricted by more than 100 countries and seven U.S. states. These traps are indiscriminate, so the non-target animal caught in a trap could be your companion animal. Children are also at risk of being injured or killed by these traps.

Spring-loaded traps can cause serious and debilitating injuries to any animal that might set it off. The traps cause severe swelling, lacerations, compound fractions and even death. When not killed outright by the trap, animals can suffer physiological trauma, dehydration, exposure to severe weather and predation by other animals until the trapper returns. This legislation would ensure that spring-loaded traps are no longer on the market or in use in New Jersey.

I hope you will give your full support to the passage of this measure before the end of the current legislative session. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
