New York: Ban the Slaughter of Horses for Human Consumption

New York: Ban the Slaughter of Horses for Human Consumption

Name: Prohibiting the Slaughter of Horses for Human Consumption

Bill Number: A 4012

While there are currently no horse slaughterhouses in New York, the state’s highways are often used to transport horses to Canada for slaughter. This bill would prohibit the sale or transport of equines and equine parts intended for human consumption through the state of New York. The slaughter of horses is anything but humane. Slaughterhouse facilities were not designed with horses in mind and panicked horses are often prodded and beaten off the truck and into the kill-chute. Stunning equipment, also not designed specifically for use on horses, sometimes requires repeated uses on high strung horses, some of whom remain conscious during slaughter. In addition, because horses are not initially raised as food, their diet and care make them particularly inappropriate for use as meat.

Please Put an End to the Slaughter and Transport of Horses for Human Consumption

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask your support for A 4012, legislation that would prevent horse slaughter in New York and put an end to the use of New York's highways to transport horses out of the country for slaughter. Unlike cows and pigs, horses are raised--and used--for many purposes, including recreation, as companion animals and as working animals. None of these uses are consistent with the raising of an animal for food.

In fact, since most horses are bought at auction for the slaughterhouse, it is impossible to evaluate individual animals to know whether they been given drugs, such as hormones and deworming medications, which are unsuitable for human consumption. This makes eating horse meat a risky business.

Because the consumption of horses raised in the United States poses a serious threat to human health, and because the slaughter of horses is anything but humane, I hope you will give your support to a prohibition on transporting horses meant for human consumption through New York.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
