Domestic Abuse Bill Addresses Needs of Women and Their Companion Animals

Domestic Abuse Bill Addresses Needs of Women and Their Companion Animals

Name: Pet and Women Safety Act of 2017

Bill Number: SB 322/HR 909

Access to pet-friendly housing provides victims of domestic violence with an opportunity to leave unsafe living situations without leaving their companion animals in the hands of their abusers. This legislation would allow victims of violence to obtain an order of protection for themselves and their companion animals in cases of interstate domestic violence and stalking. It would also establish an Emergency and Transitional Pet Shelter and Housing Assistance Grant Program that would provide funding to eligible entities for the purpose of establishing short-term pet shelters and housing assistance. The grant program would also fund support services designed to enable victims of domestic violence to locate and secure safe housing with their companion animals

Help Protect Women and Their Companion Animals from Domestic Abuse

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask your support for the Pet and Women Safety Act, SB 322/HR 909, which would help protect victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence from the trauma caused by acts or threats of violence against their pets, when interstate abuse, stalking or the violation of a protective order occurs.

This legislation would allow the inclusion of companion animals in interstate orders of protection. Twenty-seven states have enacted similar legislation, which recognizes the importance of companion animals in the cycle of abuse. This legislation would also establish an Emergency and Transitional Pet Shelter and Housing Assistance Grant Program to aid programs that allow traumatized victims to keep their companion animals with them when fleeing from abusers, or to help locate foster care or temporary housing for animal care.

Access to pet-friendly housing and safe accommodations provides victims of domestic violence with an opportunity to leave unsafe living situations without leaving their companion animals in the hands of their abusers.

Please give your support to keeping victims of domestic violence victims and their companion animals safe.

Sincerely,
