Massachusetts: Hearing to Be Held on Adoption of Dogs and Cats Used in Research

Massachusetts: Hearing Held on Adoption of Dogs and Cats Used in Research

Name: An Act Protecting Research Animals

Bill Number: H 3232/S 489

Healthy cats and dogs deserve to have the opportunity to be adopted into loving homes after being used for research, testing or education purposes, instead of being euthanized. This bill would require research institutions and product testing facilities to offer cats and dogs used in research to an animal shelter or rescue organization for adoption if the animal is deemed appropriate for adoption. In addition, this bill limits the amount of time any dog or cat can be used for research or testing to not more than two years.

A hearing took place on July 11 before the Joint Committee on Public Health, but no action has yet been taken.

Please give cats and dogs in research a chance to live in a loving home

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask for your support of H 3232/S 489, which would require research institutions and product testing facilities to make healthy dogs and cats available for adoption through an animal shelter or rescue organization instead of euthanizing them when they are no longer needed by the facility. This bill would also restrict to two years the amount of time that an individual dog or cat can be used for research or testing

Too often animals used in research are regarded as disposable commodities to be discarded when the research or testing is done. Please support this legislation to allow the adoption of healthy cats and dogs into loving homes.

Sincerely,
