Oppose House Bill to Strip Wolves of Endangered Species Act Protections

Oppose House Bill to Strip Wolves of Endangered Species Act Protections

Name: Manage our Wolves Act

Bill Number: HR 6784

Wolves are highly intelligent, social creatures who were once driven to near extinction across the contiguous 48 United States. Gray wolves have been protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in all of these states for decades. Wolves, as a keystone species, are an integral part of the ecosystem, and their presence strengthens biodiversity, boosts ecotourism and brings balance to the land. The positive effects of reintroducing wolves to their natural habitat are well documented.

In recent years, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has made several efforts to remove ESA protections for gray wolves and turn management of the population over to individual states. The states, in turn, have adopted aggressive pro-hunting efforts to eradicate the wolves once again.

Gray wolves need continued federal protection under the ESA if they are to survive and thrive. If left to the states’ control, there may well soon be no wolves left to protect.

The House has now passed legislation to fully delist gray wolves, excepting only the subspecies of Mexican gray wolves, which would retain protection.

Oppose Legislation that Would Strip Wolves of All Endangered Species Act Protections

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to you asking you to oppose the Manage our Wolves Act, HR 784, which would remove gray wolves from protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and would give states exclusive jurisdiction over the management of those wolves within their borders. This bill would impact wolf populations throughout the contiguous 48 states.

Wolves are highly intelligent, social creatures who were once driven to near extinction across the lower 48 United States. Gray wolves have been protected under the Endangered Species Act in these states for decades. Wolves, as a keystone species, are an integral part of the ecosystem, and their presence strengthens biodiversity, boosts ecotourism and brings balance to the land. The positive effects of reintroducing wolves to their natural habitat have long been well documented.

Wolves desperately need federal protection and oversight. When wolves have been delisted, state officials have instituted aggressive predator control programs and increased hunting allowances.

Please oppose this bill and ensure that gray wolves have the continued federal protection under the ESA that they need to survive and thrive. If left to the states' control, there may well soon be no wolves left to protect.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
