New Jersey: Urge Passage of State Ban on Sale of Animal-Tested Cosmetics

New Jersey: Urge Passage of State Ban on Sale of Animal-Tested Cosmetics

Name: Ban on the Sale of Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Tested on Animals

Bill Number: A 4818

New Jersey currently has a ban on the use of animals for testing the safety of cosmetics. The New Jersey Assembly is now considering bill, A 4818, to ban the sale of all animal-tested cosmetics, regardless of whether they were manufactured inside or outside of the state, although it exempts cosmetics manufactured outside of the country where animal testing is required by that country’s law.

Support a ban on the sale of cosmetics tested on animals

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask you to urge the Assembly to conduct hearings on A 4818, which would end the sale, in the state of New Jersey, of cosmetics that are tested on animals. Safe and reliable non-animal safety tests have existed for years, and hundreds of brands currently sell cosmetics that are cruelty free.

New Jersey is already leading the way with its ban on the use of animals for cosmetics safety testing. The proposed sales ban is a logical extension of this existing law, which will impact only those few companies that still rely on outmoded animal tests to determine the safety of their products. Products produced in countries where animals are still required to be used for safety testing are exempted from the sale ban.

The European Union has adopted progressive test methods and a humane standard for testing cosmetics for safety, and many individual countries have also adopted non-animal-based testing for cosmetics safety. Last year, California became the first state to ban the sale of animal-tested cosmetics in their state.

Please let our state be the next one to support the global movement toward cruelty-free cosmetics.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
