Co-Sponsor S. 746, the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a supporter of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), I urge you to cosponsor S.746, the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act and to help advance the bill to the Senate floor for a vote.

S. 746, the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act was introduced by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) on March 16, 2015. Today this bipartisan bill has over 50 cosponsors. The cosponsors include over 50% of the members of the HELP committee-which is the sole committee of jurisdiction. This bill would help leverage existing research and technologies to help end breast cancer.

S. 746 focuses on identifying strategies for the primary prevention of breast cancer, and preventing metastasis which is responsible for over 90% of breast cancer deaths. It would create a 10 person commission which would include representatives of: biomedical research, business, breast cancer advocacy, and other disciplines, who have demonstrated an ability to be innovative. The commissioners would be tasked with identifying existing opportunities, tools, technologies and ideas that are not currently being prioritized for breast cancer by the public and private sectors- but which hold true promise in ending breast cancer.

The commission would not duplicate the efforts of other government agencies and programs, but instead it would help ensure our nation's limited research dollars are leveraged to accelerate progress already begun. The commission would have annual congressional oversight, receive an external review by the Institute of Medicine and has a 5 year sunset trigger.

S. 746 is bipartisan, non-controversial and will accelerate the progress already made towards ending breast cancer. I urge you to cosponsor and help advance the bill for a vote in the Senate. I look forward to your response regarding the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act. Please feel welcome to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
