Immigrants Must Be Protected

take action

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued implementation memos on February 20 for President Trump’s two executive orders issued on January 25, “Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements” and “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States.” These memos instruct immigration enforcement officials to detain all undocumented immigrants they encounter, further militarize the border, penalize asylum seekers and family members who help their children get to the US, and forces local law enforcement to serve as immigration agents. In sum, the memos are a blueprint for a mass deportation machine. Raids in the wake of the executive orders and memos have swept up six men at a hypothermia shelter in Virginia, a woman in a Texas courthouse seeking protection from domestic abuse, and recipients in Washington and Texas of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, among others.
