Women have always earned less than men for the same work. Overall, women earn 80 cents for every dollar paid to men, and it’s worse for women of color: African American women earn 63 cents, Native American women earn 58 cents, and Latinas earn just 54 cents. The Paycheck Fairness Act (S819 / HR 1869), introduced by Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) on April 4, would deter wage discrimination by updating and strengthening the Equal Pay Act. It would bar retaliation against workers who disclose their own wages to co-workers, and prohibit employers from seeking a job applicant’s salary history so that pay discrimination will no longer follow women and people of color from job to job.
