The John R. Whitman Normandy Scholarship enables students across the United States access to lessons learned during the incredible journey the U.S. took during World War II.

A veteran of the Vietnam war who emerged with two Bronze Stars, including one “V” for valor, John was born June 8th, 1944, or "D-Day plus two,” as he always said. Although a veteran, Vietnam represented a different sort of conflict; John always marveled at the bravery and innate leadership shown by the troops landing at Normandy. He and his wife, Christie, enjoyed several trips with The National WWII Museum and were strong believers in its mission, particularly the importance of education to develop an informed citizenry.
