Every year, Alexandria hosts a holiday charity drive to
raise money and give back to our local communities. Each regional office
collects food, toys, clothing, and/or monetary donations from our employees,
tenants, property vendors, and contractors to give to non-profit organizations.
This year, Alexandria’s
Pasadena HQ office is excited to partner with Project Angel Food, a non-profit
organization located in Los Angeles. Project Angel Food provides a vital
lifeline of hope and nutrition to our neighbors struggling with critical
illness by cooking and delivering more than 11,000 meals every week to people
who are too sick to shop and cook for themselves.
Project Angel Food operates with the knowledge that food is
medicine and therefore medically tailors its recipes and designs freshly cooked
meals to offer optimum benefits, including overall improved health, efficacy of
vital medications, prevention of secondary illnesses, and optimum body weight. This
one-on-one connection is the heart of Project Angel Food’s mission — to
deliver nutritious meals served with love.
Alexandria HQ’s goal this year is to provide
enough support to upgrade Project Angel Food’s delivery vehicle to one that is
insulated, refrigerated, stain resistant, and easy to clean, in order to ensure
optimum food safety for its clients. For the last 10 years, Project Angel
Food has been using Styrofoam coolers to deliver their clients’ meals. For each
client, dispatch fills one cooler with a week’s supply of meals for delivery
and stores them in its freezer the day before delivery where drivers must then load
them onto a van and return them to the kitchen to be reused for the next trip. Styrofoam
is burdensome and environmentally unfriendly. Van refrigeration, however, would
greatly reduce time, storage costs, and Project Angel Food’s carbon footprint,
and more importantly, those whose lives depend on Project Angel Food’s meals
will receive their meals in the most food-safe way available. This one-on-one connection is the heart of
Project Angel Food’s mission – meals served with Love. The cost per van is $15,000, and Alexandria
HQ’s goal is to cover the cost of the conversion of one van, possibly two.
