The results of the SSCI investigation could put to bed the persistent rumors claiming that torture is a useful interrogation technique. Releasing the results of this investigation could also lead to safeguards being put in place to help prevent torture from occurring in the future. Many supporters of torture continue to claim that its use made our country safer. They are wrong, and the SSCI report could help prove that they're wrong.
It is critical that this report be made public! Please urge President Obama to expedite the report’s declassification. We believe it will provide important evidence showing that torture was a net negative for our national security.
We Deserve the Truth About Torture
Dear President Obama,
Thank you for taking such a strong stance against torture early in your presidency. As you know, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has adopted its report on the investigation into CIA interrogations. The Committee still needs to vote to trigger the formal declassification review process of the report. But I urge you to prepare for the review process and to release as much of the full report to the public as possible. Doing so will provide the public and policymakers the opportunity to improve upon past practices.I believe -- and your previous commitments indicate that you agree -- that torture is always wrong. As an American, I believe that our country has been hurt by torture. Unfortunately, there is division in our country over the question of whether or not we should use torture (or its euphemism "enhanced interrogation techniques"). I hope that the results of the Intelligence Committee's investigation will settle this debate. But that can only happen if the report is made public. Secrecy enables torture and you have the power to stop it.Please expedite the declassification review and release the report on the results of the investigation. Public debate on this issue should be informed by facts. I believe that with access to the facts, the American people will follow American values and reject the use of torture.Thank you.
