This is for you, Nanu!
My grandpa, Frank Giordano, has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest and fondest childhood memories include hanging around the Giordano Tailor Shop after school, an alterations mom-and-pop started by my grandparents after emigrating from Italy in the 60s. Aida and Frank were somewhat of local legends, known just as much for their wicked abilities with a needle and thread as they were for their kind, reliable, and steadfast attitudes. The sense of pride I felt every time Nanu hung one of my drawings up on the shop wall, or a friend at school told me how perfect Nana's alterations were on her dress, or other local mom-and-pop owners asked me to pass along gifts and well wishes - I knew my grandparents were special.
Frank has been living with Parkinson's for almost 20 years now. It has been a difficult journey, as the disease has taken away some of his favorite pastimes - sewing a hem, serenading an audience, dancing a waltz. However, if Nanu is anything, he is a fighter ("strong like bull" as we like to say), and he knows there is still beautiful life to be led. His strong quality of life, even with this degenerative disease, is owed largely in part to my family. Watching them consistently dedicate their time and energy to providing around-the-clock care has taught me the true meaning of "blood is thicker than water," and inspired me to play a bigger part in this familial team.
I am running the NYC Marathon (my first marathon!) to raise funds and awareness with the Parkinson's Foundation. Their efforts are focused on improving care and quality of life, as well as advancing research towards a cure. I am incredibly appreciative of any dollar amount you can contribute, and I thank you in advance for your unending support. It truly means the world to my family!
