Movers & Shakers of BR
Welcome to the Movers & Shakers of Baton Rouge Moving Day Team Page
The Movers and Shaker of Baton Rouge Parkinson’s disease support group (Movers & Shakers of BR) celebrated its 10th anniversary last Spring and is building a strong base each year even with two years of self-isolation during the Pandemic.
The Movers & Shakers of BR meet on the fourth Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. Sometimes participants bring food and share stories. Occasionally that group has a speaker, but it’s the fellowship and social interaction that is the driving force for many members to attend.
There’s much to gain from being part of this support group. Talking with members of the group and hearing expert speakers helps us to understand terminology so that we can better communicate our needs with our doctors. Through these meetings, we learn what is going on in the area that can help a person with Parkinson’s (PWP) such as Tia Chi, dance, and yoga classes. Then there is the all- important opportunity to network with people one-on-one. We compare doctors and medications. We share stories such as adapting the house for aging-in-place, the trials of staying in hospitals, families, travels, and hobbies. Important information about lobbying and research is shared at meetings, as well. The Movers & Shakers of BR promote PD awareness every April at events such as this one.
Being available to support other people and to keep up on the latest developments on PD makes members feel more proactive and empowered about addressing PD and less of a victim. The friends we make at Movers &Shakers of BR share a special bond from the newly diagnosed, to people who have had Parkinson’s for decades, and caregivers. In the United States, 50,000-60,000 new cases of Parkinson’s disease (PD) are diagnosed each year, adding to the one million people who currently have PD.
Join our team for the local Parkinson’s Foundation Moving Day walk, the first nationwide grassroots campaign that spotlights the disease on a national level and gives the chance to raise awareness and funds in our own community. Your support will help us continue improving the quality of care for those living with Parkinson’s disease.
