My introduction and experience With Parkinson's Disease

My name is Vilasini Shanbhag MD. I have lived in Buffalo area since 1975
My introduction to Parkinsons Disease dates back to my teen years. That was when I found out, my dear great aunt who was a wonderful, happy and active person was afflicted with PD
During my school days and medical school years, my ears would perk up whenever l heard Parkinson Disease. I was keenly aware of the early syptoms. Fast forward many years, my husband - who was a accomplished surgeon with many hobbies including photography, philately, wine connoisseur and a travel enthusiast - found his handwriting was not as clear as it used to be. He was doing well otherwise. I did not recognize this as an early symptom. I guess there are numerous ways it comes to light. Once he was diagnosed to have PD he coped well with L-dopa which was the only drug available at that time. He was able to manage his medical practice and be a great husband and a father. He gave up his practice and stopped driving at appropriate times. His memory was so good that he was a great navigator as well (Pre GPS era). I miss him a lot. He was self sufficient until about 7-8 years prior , the last 2 being in a Nursing Home. His memory was good but had problems articulating.
My very dear friend since I arrived in Buffalo was also afflicted with PD. She had problems with her balance and has passed away. I understand dogs also suffer from " Wobblers Syndrome" akin to PD. My niece lost her dog recently to that.
I am impressed with the research in genetics and drug therapy developments. This walk, your contributions all go to the local NY and NJ chapters. They provide funding for lots of activities, lectures and literatute to the patients and care givers.
Please donate generously and request your family and friends to so also. This year, this walk happens to fall on my husband Madhukar Shanbhag's Birthday, so it is extra special to me and my family.
Thank you!
