Welcome to Phyllis' Page
Hello Friends and Family,
I'm moving to beat Parkinson's disease!
I’m excited to share that I’ve joined Moving Day, A Walk for Parkinson’s, to honor those living with Parkinson’s, their loved ones, and the dedicated individuals working to end this disease. This cause is deeply personal to me.
My father battled Parkinson’s, and in 2020, my husband, James, was diagnosed after a long and challenging journey to find answers. For almost a year, James struggled with falls and stiffness in his leg and after multiple tests and visits to three different doctors, we finally received his diagnosis. In hindsight, we now recognize some of the signs that were present years before.
Parkinson’s has changed our lives, but it has also empowered us. In 2023, James and I became advocates for the Parkinson’s Foundation. The Parkinson's Foundation Research Advocacy Program trains people with Parkinson's and care partners in research advocacy. It was established in 2008 and in 2023 it was redesigned to specifically and intentionally meet the unique experiences and needs of the Black/African American people living with PD. We participated in a 3-day educational program in Atlanta with about 40 other people that looked like us. This was designed to raise awareness within the African American community. It was an enlightening experience to meet others who shared similar stories and to learn about the power of our voices in the research process.
What many may not know is that the full impact of Parkinson’s within the African American community is still unknown. The Parkinson’s Foundation is working to bridge this gap, ensuring healthcare becomes more accessible and equitable for all. Research is crucial, and we need more representation in studies to find a cure.
This is where I need your help.
Every dollar I raise goes directly to the Parkinson’s Foundation to support their mission of improving the lives of the one million Americans affected by this disease. Your contribution, no matter the amount, will help fund research, raise awareness, and bring us closer to a cure.
Together, we can make a life-changing difference for families like mine and millions of others. Please consider making a donation to support my efforts in Moving Day.
Thank you for standing with me in this fight.
