We lost my Dad on Sunday, September 18th, 2022. He was diagnosed a few years ago with Parkinson’s Disease and dementia, but had likely been feeling its effects for years prior. Before the doctors confirmed what was happening, we began to notice small changes in his behavior and memory, and reductions in his mobility.
He was never very active (except for the frequent laps around the store he managed during his career in retail) and was usually quiet and never chatty. He enjoyed reading, watching TV, going to sporting events, and just being with his family. The Parkinson’s slowed him down and eventually made him immobile and stiff, except for the involuntary tremors and fidgeting. The dementia robbed him of his interest in TV and sports, and stole his ability to read, communicate, and do simple things.
The doctors prescribed drugs to address the dopamine deficiency that causes Parkinson’s disease, but this only slowed the decline. There is currently no cure for the disease.
Organizations like the Parkinson’s Foundation have made great strides towards understanding the disease and finding a cure. This foundation continues the research that will eventually mean the end of the disease and the pain that it causes to those who have Parkinson’s and their families.
Thank you for making a donation in memory of my Dad.
