Instituto de Pesquisa Ecológicas (IPÊ)

Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (IPÊ) was founded in 1992 and is one of the largest environmental nonprofit organizations in Brazil. IPÊ conducts scientific research on animal species, forest restoration, environmental education and sustainable businesses. IPÊ also works to influence public policy in order to conserve biodiversity in three Brazilian biomes: the Atlantic Forest, the Amazon and the Pantanal. IPÊ organizes around 40 projects every year with over 10,000 participants, primarily focused on environmental education, training, rural outreach and income-generation.

IPÊ’s efforts in the Atlantic Forest have led to the largest forest restoration in Brazil, which has conserved over 1.4 million trees and ensured the survival of several species. IPÊ also helped to move the Black Lion Tamarin from “critically endangered” to “endangered” status as determined by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Finally, IPÊ created the School for Environmental Conservation and Sustainability (ESCAS) which offers short-term courses and MBA and master’s degree programs for professionals who want to learn more about the environment and become leaders in this sector. ESCAS has taught more than 5,000 professionals to date.

IPÊ has received international and national recognition for its environmental work, including earning the title for Social Entrepreneur from the Schwab Foundation, the Henry Ford Nature Conservation Prize, the Whitley Gold Award and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise, among others.
