Aprendo Contigo – meaning “Learning with You” – is program that provides education and stimulation to children who are unable to attend school because they are hospitalized or receiving outpatient medical treatment. Unlike other hospital schooling programs in Latin America, Aprendo Contigo operates without government support, thanks to the participation of multi-disciplinary professionals who volunteer their time and are trained and supervised by specialized teachers.
Aprendo Contigo is recognized by the Peruvian Ministry of Education as a nonprofit educational and recreational program that facilitates children’s return to their grade in school once they have completed their treatment. Aprendo Contigo has worked at Peru’s National Institute of Neoplastic Disease (INEN) since 2000 and National Children’s Hospital (INSN) since 2009, caring for an average of 250 children every day.
Because medicine is centralized in the capital city of Lima, about 70 percent of the children Aprendo Contigo serves travel to the city from other parts of the country. As a result, they suffer not only the effects of their medical conditions but also the displacement and distance from their families and friends. In many cases they even speak a different language. Aprendo Contigo has played an important role in promoting a holistic view of child patients as active and collaborative agents of their own treatment, and also provides support to the children’s parents during these difficult times.
