Tell the Governor to Take Action on New Jersey VW-Settlement Funds

We need you to stand up for clean air in New Jersey and tell Governor Christie to accept the $65 million in Volkswagen Settlement funds! After Volkswagen was found guilty for tampering with emissions testing devises on their vehicles, the company agreed to settle by spending more than $14.7 billion across the country to help reduce emissions and improve air quality.New Jersey is eligible for $65 million. ince more than half of our air pollution comes from automobiles and trucks exhaust, we are concerned that the Governor has not agreed to accept the funds yet and the deadline is approaching. We need you to tell him that New Jersey residents deserve our fair share of the settlement money.

As a result of our Governor’s national political agenda, he has blocked electric vehicles, failed to address climate change, and increased the level of harmful pollution in our communities, putting our air and our health at risk.. Despite every other U.S. state claiming  their portion of the settlement money, we are concerned that the Christie Administration may not accept the funding because it is tied to reducing climate impacts from transportation, likely because  he he can’t divert the funding to fill holes in the budget, which he’s done with the Passaic and Exxon Settlements. We must make sure that New Jersey does not miss this opportunity to expand clean transportation and protect public health!

Volkswagen chose to poison our families with dangerous pollution just to pad its pocketbook. It’s estimated that the 11 million affected vehicles worldwide could be causing as much air pollution as 20 coal plants every year. New Jersey desperately needs this money to install charging stations throughout the state, deploy electric buses, and electrify our ports.. Our Governor has until the end of this month to take claim this funding for New Jersey. In states across the nation, there are already public hearings to decide how the funds will be used. E-mail our Governor now to demand that Governor Christie immediately claim  the settlement funds so that New Jersey can fully embrace a future of clean transportation that we deserve and need!

TAKE ACTION NOW:

  1. Take action by e-mailing the Governor now.
  2. Call the NJ Governor’s office at  609-292-6000 and tell Governor Christie:

“New Jersey is entitled to $65 million in  Volkswagen settlement funds and we urge you to claim this money immediately so New Jersey can speed the transition to electric transportation and clean our air that Volkswagen has illegally and deceitfully polluted. To comply with the settlement agreement, you must designate a lead agency and provide the required “beneficiary certification” by the end of February. New Jersey desperately needs this funding to build electric vehicle infrastructure, increase electric buses, and electrify our ports. We urge you to accept this money and  schedule public hearings on how New Jersey can most effectively benefit from these funds.”
