Tell Gov Murphy: Protect the Pinelands and Public Rights!

We need your help to protect the people and environment of the Pinelands! On Friday, June 8th, the Pinelands Commission will be voting to eliminate the rights of members of the public to an evidentiary hearing on permits meaning they can grant permits without public input. This takes away the right of the public to have a say in what happens in our backyard and can lead to more dangerous development, including pipelines, in the Pines. This dangerous rule was rejected previously by the Commission and now it’s back.

The Commission meeting is Friday, June 8th at 9:30 am in New Lisbon, and we need people to show up and speak out against this rule, telling the Commissioners to reject it!

If you cannot attend the meeting, send a letter to Governor Murphy, telling him he must not let the Pinelands Commission vote to take away the public’s right to a hearing on permits approved within the Pines! Even if the Commission does vote to pull down this rule, Governor Murphy still can stop it by vetoing the meeting minutes! That’s why we need you to tell the Governor’s office NOT to allow this to go through and to preserve the right of the people to speak up in protecting the Pinelands that belong to all of us!

This new rule would make it easier for the Commission to allow pipelines and other development through the Pinelands without the public having a real say. The rule itself is also being pushed through without hearings or due process. The Pinelands is the largest open space on the eastern seaboard and recognized for its biodiversity by the United Nations. It is also the country’s first National Reserve and holds 17 trillion gallons of water in its aquifer.

The right of public participation has been recognized by the Commission since Day one and revoking it is a blatant attack on the environment and people of the Pines. People have the right to participate in decisions that have a direct impact on their lives and property. Tell Governor Murphy to uphold his promise to protect New Jersey’s Pinelands by stopping this vote that would strip the rights of the people to have a say in what is built in and near their own property and in the Pinelands!

Thanks for all you do!

Protect the Pinelands and Public Rights: Stop Commission Rule!

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to urge you to stop the Pinelands Commission from taking away the rights of the public and the people who live in the Pines. Please help us stop yet another assault on the Pinelands Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP) by blocking the Pinelands Commission from voting on a rule to take away the public's rights to evidentiary hearings on permits before the Commission. This action is improper procedurally because there has not been a rulemaking process on which to base the vote. The Pines belong to all of us and we should all have the right to testify about what development might go there.

The Commission is voting to eliminate the public's ability to contest major development actions by the Commission's Executive Director in an evidentiary hearing, a right built into the Pinelands rules since 1980. People have the right to participate in decisions that have a direct impact on their lives and property. During your campaign you promised to protect the Pinelands by making sure the Commission was filled with members who want to protect the Pines. Now we need you to stand by those promises and stop the Commission from voting on this terrible rule that takes away the rights of the people of New Jersey!

Sincerely,
