Ask Governor Murphy to please VETO the Bad Plastic Bag Fee Bill

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am asking you to please veto A.3267 (Huttle)/ S2600 (Ruiz). This bill will block a statewide ban on single use plastic bags and prevent towns from having their own ban. Jersey City and Hoboken recently passed a ban and Atlantic County and Edison are trying to move forward with one. Plastic has been a menace to the environment. When marine animals ingest these plastics, they can enter the food chain putting human health at risk because of the toxins in the plastic. Plastic can take up to 1,000 years to decompose and end up in our landfills or break down into micro-pieces that contaminate ecosystems and environments. Plastic bags are made from natural gas which means more fossil fuel use, more pipelines, and more fracking.

Fees are not as effective as bans. Under this bill, we would use 750 million plastic bags a year, that's a lot of damage to the environment. The fee will not go to its intended purposes for lead abatement programs. Instead, it would be diverted and that is wrong. We thank you for not diverting the plastic fee money by removing it from the budget. We ask that you veto this plastic bag fee bill and fix it with legislation that will help New Jersey move forward with a comprehensive ban on plastic. It is too important and critical for our environment.

Sincerely,
