Support preschool expansion in the Senate FY20 State Budget

Dear [Decision Maker],

Please support the continued expansion of high-quality preschool in Massachusetts, by funding line item 3000-6025, Commonwealth Preschool Partnership Initiative, at $25 million in the Senate budget for fiscal year 2020.

Without this funding, current preschool classrooms supported by the federal PEG grant are at risk of closing.

Across Massachusetts, people are ready for more preschool. Parents want this learning opportunity for their children, but often can't afford it or are on waiting lists. Local communities, led by community-based programs, school districts, and mayors, have solid plans for preschool expansion and are waiting for new public dollars to begin implementation.

Line item 3000-6025, Commonwealth Preschool Partnership Initiative, provides grants to high-needs communities to expand high-quality preschool in the mixed-delivery system of public and private programs. Currently, eight communities have either a federal Preschool Expansion Grant or a state-funded Commonwealth Preschool Partnership Initiative grant: Boston, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, New Bedford, North Adams, Somerville, and Springfield. Funding the line item at $25 million would help prevent preschool closures in these communities - and would instead continue the innovative work of public and private early childhood partners, serving high-need children and their families.

$25 million would also allow additional communities to participate. The following communities are ready with preschool plans and waiting for a preschool grant: Athol, Brockton, Cape Cod, Fall River, Haverhill, Lee, Lynn, Northampton, Pittsfield, Salem, and Worcester.

Let's level the playing field for all young children and expand preschool opportunity in Massachusetts.

Thank you for your leadership.

Sincerely,
