European Leaders: Stand up for Tibet

Stand up for Tibet French, German and Belgian leaders will meet with China's President Xi Jinping this week. They are uniquely positioned to push China's top leader to end the crackdown and restore freedom in Tibet.

Tibetans are lighting their own bodies on fire to protest China's destruction of their land, culture and way of life. In response, Chinese forces are arresting and imprisoning anyone connected to the self-immolators, further compounding Tibetans' suffering.

As you prepare to meet with China's President Xi Jinping this week, I wish to alert you to China's escalating human rights violations in Tibet.

Since Xi Jinping took office, the number of Tibetans who have lit themselves on fire to call for an end to China's occupation and the return of the Dalai Lama has increased to a staggering 129. China's response to this devastating wave of protests has been to arrest, imprison and further crackdown on Tibetans' rights and freedoms.

Xi Jinping has shown no sign of changing course in Tibet. Instead he has continued down the same path as previous leaders, implementing a harsh military crackdown, which far from achieving the stability China seeks, serves to exacerbate Tibetan grievances and heighten tensions across Tibet. Family members of those setting light to themselves have been turned into criminals. A Tibetan man, Dolma Kyab, was sentenced to death in response to the self-immolation of his wife. He was charged for the "murder" of his wife.

You are uniquely positioned to press China's President Xi Jinping to end the crackdown and restore Tibetan freedom. I urge you to stand up for our democratic principles of human rights and freedom during your visit by taking these actions for Tibet:

* Publicly and vigorously urge Chinese President Xi Jinping to end the violence in Tibet and genuinely address the grievances of the Tibetan people; and

* Join like-minded governments to multilaterally discuss solutions to the Tibet crisis and protect the lives of innocent Tibetans like Dolma Kyab.
