Dear President Monaco,

I am appalled that Tufts University continues to host a Confucius Institute (CI) and accept funding from a genocidal authoritarian regime that oppresses millions of Tibetans, Uyghurs, Hong Kongers, Mongolians, and Chinese people. Confucius Institutes are programs that are sponsored by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which is responsible for vast human rights violations both at home, abroad, and within the countries it occupies. CI's are highly controversial programs fully funded by the CCP which US lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are concerned about. Just days ago, the US Senate unanimously passed a bill (S.590) that places restrictions on universities with CIs. The bill states that federal funding will be cut for any university that decides to host a CI.

There is still time for Tufts University to end its complicity. President Monaco, you have an incredible opportunity to make things right. Sever Tufts University's ties to the CCP by terminating the contract with Hanban--stand up for human rights and freedom. Join the students and young people who are protesting every Saturday on campus. Help them make Somerville and Medford a safe place for all, free of authoritarianism and fear. Thank you.

Sincerely,
