Confucius Institutes are programs that are sponsored by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which is responsible for vast human rights violations both at home, abroad, and within the countries it occupies. CI's are highly controversial programs fully funded by the CCP which US lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are concerned about. Just days ago, the US Senate unanimously passed a bill (S.590) that places restrictions on universities with CIs. The bill states that federal funding will be cut for any university that decides to host a CI.
