Be a part of an ambitious global project: Help create 1,000 vegetable gardens in 26 countries across Africa

Community gardens represent a critical source of healthy food in Africa, where food can be scarce or unstable. The Thousand Gardens are concrete models of sustainable agriculture, sensitive to local conditions, and easily replicable. Unlike projects run by some international aid groups that are managed from afar, the gardens in this program are almost entirely planned, staffed, and tended by local communities themselves, and draw on their leaders’ intimate knowledge of the unique climate and history of the region. International coordination and assistance supports the distinct needs of each garden, as determined by a council of national garden coordinators.

  • Train a garden coordinator for each site;
  • Develop a local team of gardeners;
  • Provide educational tools in a local language (Swahili, Amharic, Oromo, Bambara, Wolof);
  • Organize gatherings of regional garden leaders to exchange ideas, seeds, and tools;
  • And guarantee a daily supply of fresh, healthy food for local communities.

All supporters of the Thousand Gardens in Africa project will receive a monthly e-newsletter to follow the progress of these communities, including stories of their successes and challenges.
