The 3 Wishes Project was founded in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Joe’s in January 2013. Since then, this approach to end-of-life care has spread to many settings within and beyond the hospital, and around the world. In 2023, we’re celebrating the 10th Anniversary of this incredible program that helps to personalize the dying process, asking what matters now to the patient and family, and how can we help. The 3 Wishes Project aims to honour and respect the lives of our dying patients while fostering a connection between patients, their family members and their clinicians to ease the grieving process for all. This is done by eliciting and implementing some final wishes for patients in their final days. Wishes can be as simple as a bedside serenade, personal mementos for family and friends, or a visit from a beloved pet ---- to ceremonies such as renewal of wedding vows hosted in a patient’s room.
