End the shutdown. Don't fund an immoral wall.
Dear [Decision Maker],
I am writing to urge you to work with the leadership of both parties in the Senate to bring a speedy end to the government shutdown. In particular I call on you to urge Sen. Mitch McConnell to bring up the remaining appropriations bills, scheduled to pass the House this week, for a vote. McConnell and the Senate cannot be bullied into inaction by the president.I also call on you to condemn the president for his mischaracterization of immigrants as rapists and murderers, a rhetoric he has used since he announced his candidacy for president in 2015. This is divisive rhetoric and fosters fear and mistrust. The longer the funding standoff keeps a quarter of the government shuttered, the more serious the impacts become, especially on some of the most vulnerable people in our society, who as Christians we are commanded in Matthew 25 to treat as we would treat Jesus Christ himself. Perhaps the biggest threat that's receiving the least attention is to SNAP. It is unacceptable that 38 million Americans will likely begin losing their monthly benefit that helps them put food on the table for their families if this shutdown continues. Or that Section 8 affordable housing contracts are in limbo until the government reopens. As Christians we cannot allow these impacts on vulnerable people to go unchallenged. We must urge the Senate to pass the funding bills that the House will send them to restore the operation of government agencies and end this shutdown.I will continue to keep you and all of the leaders of our nation in my prayers as you work to reopen the government and protect the most vulnerable in our society.
Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP][Your Email]
