Ask Congress to fund re-entry programs for incarcerated people

Crucial programs that assist individuals preparing to leave prison are in jeopardy right now because Congress has not funded the FIRST STEP Act. Ask your senators and representative to fund the FIRST STEP Act to provide these crucial programs that reduce recidivism:

  • Education courses, allowing incarcerated people to get a GED or take other general and advanced occupational education classes.
  • Substance abuse treatment, for incarcerated persons who are addicted.
  • Robust job training, preparing them for life in the workforce after prison.

As people of faith, we believe in the transformative power of God. We also believe strongly in redemption. Funding the FIRST STEP Act will provide redemptive paths to exit the criminal justice system and give incarcerated people a second chance. It is critical that people are given the opportunity to succeed through these programs.

Please fund the FIRST STEP Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am disheartened that Congress, so soon after passing the FIRST STEP Act, failed to provide any appropriations for enacting the bill in FY19 spending. Without this funding, crucial programs designed to reduce recidivism remain stalled. I'm writing to ask you to pass an appropriations bill to fully fund the programs of FIRST STEP Act.
As a person of faith, I believe in the transformative power of God. I also believe strongly in redemption. It is critical that people are given the opportunity to succeed through these programs that provide:

- Education courses, allowing incarcerated people to get a GED or take other general and advanced occupational education classes.
- Substance abuse treatment, for incarcerated persons who are addicted.
- Robust job training, preparing them for life in the workforce after prison.

From literacy programs to drug treatment, to job training, these are the building blocks to help ensure incarcerated individuals are equipped with the tools they need to succeed upon release. All these programs work in concert with one another, but they will not work without funding.

Please act to fully fund these programs at the levels authorized by the FIRST STEP Act.

Sincerely,
