Common Ground for the Common Good

To break through the current gridlock and dysfunction in Washington, D.C., our political leaders must put the common good above political self-interest. Yet, the concept of the common good is often ignored by our elected leaders. That ancient but still highly relevant idea requires us to care for more than just ourselves or our own group. We must be concerned about our neighbors and the health of the society we share with one another.

The common good is not about Right and Left. By focusing on the quality of our life together, it transcends partisan politics. We can move beyond the political ideologies that are currently paralyzing our nation. We must regain a moral compass for our public life by again prioritizing the common good.

Petition text

Dear President Obama and members of Congress,

As Christians, we believe in the common good, an old ethic which says we must care for more than just ourselves or our own group. We have responsibilities to each other, and we need to care about the health of the life we share together. Just as Jesus challenges all of us to love our neighbors as ourselves, we challenge Congress and the White House to advance the common good. In an age defined by gridlock and dysfunction, we believe this simple concept could break down barriers and help move our country forward.

We urge you to apply this simple idea to the choices you face and the decisions you make. Please find common ground for the common good.
