Tell your elected officials: Pass fair carbon fee legislation!
Last month, four members of Congress released a new
proposal that would establish a fee on carbon emissions. Rep. Henry Waxman
and Rep. Earl Blumenauer joined with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Sen. Brian
Schatz to craft this proposal and are now
asking for public comments regarding
details of the bill. This is an opportunity for you and members of your
congregation to help design legislation that will limit the effects of global
warming and climate change. Additionally, you can write your Senators and
Congressional Representatives to pass a
carbon fee bill that is fair and effective.
sources such as coal, oil, and natural gas add
tons of pollution every day as they are mined or drilled from the earth, burned
to produce electricity and manufacture
products, used in transportation, and disposed of as waste material. All this
carbon-based energy use contributes to global climate change, serious health
problems in children and adults, and sea level rise as temperatures warm. We
cannot continue to use carbon-based energy sources and ensure a livable planet
for future generations.
Why do we need a carbon fee and what will
- A carbon fee will
use the free market system to establish an incentive for energy users to switch
to sources that are cheaper and renewable.
- It will establish
a price per ton of carbon that can be annually increased to produce more
revenue and reduce carbon pollution.
- It will return
the revenue to the American people in a fair and balanced way that will include
citizens at all levels of income.
- It will reduce
the use of fossil fuels that leads to the harmful effects of air pollution. It will help our children breathe.
As people of faith, we are called to take care of
Creation now and for future generations after us. Take action:
1. Help shape
future legislation by submitting
your comments on the carbon fee proposal before April 12th. Submit here.
2. Use the letter below to write
your Senators and your U.S. Representative and tell them we need a just and significant fee
on carbon that will move us away from this harmful energy source and towards
sustainable energy solutions.
