Clean water for the planet and ALL of God's children!

During our Mission 4/1 Earth: 50 Great Days campaign, we as people of faith have been responding to God’s call to care for all of creation by lifting up a variety of issues related to environmental justice. Rooted in a biblical understanding of our role as a part of creation, we recall the words of the prophet Isaiah that:

Honduras Rice Farmer Paul Jeffrey Ecumenical Advocacy AllianThe wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.” - Isaiah 43:20-21

Although in recent years the proportion of people living without consistent access to clean water has been reduced, there are unfortunately still more than 780 million people around the world living without sustainable options for improved water. This burden falls most heavily on populations that are already vulnerable, in particular women and children. Diarrhea due to poor water and sanitation is a leading cause of death among children around the world, resulting in one death every 20 seconds. Congress has failed to pass important legislation to coordinate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) projects during the last couple of Congresses.

It is time to take action to improve access to clean water for all of God’s people. Urge your members of Congress to sponsor and reintroduce the Senator Paul Simon Water for the World Act.

The Water for the World legislation requires the Secretary of State, in conjunction with the U.S. Agency for International development (USAID) and other U.S. Government agencies, to develop and implement a strategy to increase fair and affordable access to safe drinking water and sanitation within the context of sound resource management in developing countries. It would improve coordination and oversight of U.S. Government’s WASH programs, increase WASH project sustainability, and integrate WASH programming across other development sectors. In meeting our human needs, we must not overlook the effects our actions have on the earth. This legislation emphasizes sustainable projects that protect precious water resources and maintain a healthy balance for our planet.

It is time for us to stop pushing aside this legislation and make a serious commitment providing water access in ways that sustain God’s people and God’s planet. Take action now!
